PATRICK STRONG
Patrick Strong is a martial artist with extensive training, including studying under Bruce Lee. He has multiple black belt ranks and is the founder of Deep Level Jeet Kune Do. He co-founded Deep Level Corp., which creates fitness and therapeutic products for people with neurological disabilities and diseases. Their vision is to combine martial arts principles with modern science and technology to improve lives and inspire others, including special needs kids, through martial arts.
TIM CARTMELL
Tim Cartmell began his martial arts training with Chinese style martial arts in 1972. Tim trained to the level of eighth-degree black belt in Kung Fu San Soo, and then moved to the Republic of China where he lived and studied martial arts full time for 11 years. Tim is an Asian Full-Contact fighting champion, a Submissions Grappling champion, a two-time Pan-American Brazilian Jiu Jitsu champion, and seven-time winner of the Copa Pacifica de Jiu Jitsu. Cartmell received his black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 2003. Tim is the author of the book, "Effortless Combat Throws" as well as the co-author of "Xing Yi Nei Gong: Health Maintenance and Internal Strength Development" and "Passing the Guard." Tim is the translator of the books, "Practical Chin Na: A Detailed Anaysis of the Art of Seizing and Locking," "A Study of Taijiquan," “The Method of Chinese Wrestling," and "Chin Na Fa: Traditional Chinese Submission Grappling." At present, Tim is a fifth-degree Black Belt instructor of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, as well as a professional MMA coach.
STEVEN PLINCK
Steven personally learned from his grandmother Oma Dejong at 9 years of age and from his Uncle Oom John at the age of 15. At Age 17, he began his formal Silat training outside of his family with Guru Besar Arthur Rhemrev in Serak, Cimande, Setia Hati, and Combat Juijitsu for 8 years. Following this, he began training with Pendekar Agung Paul de Thouars. This training lasted for 10 years. Pendekar Paul was his last Serak Teacher. Stevan Plinck has focused his studies on Pukulan Pentjak Silat Serak since he was first introduced to it. He has been teaching people since the age of 18. He has over 50 years of authentic Pentjak Silat experience and training. He lives in Washington State and teaches Serak worldwide.
ERIC KNAUSS
Eric Knaus was fortunate to have been introduced to Pekiti Tersia from Leo Gaje while a student at Columbia University in New York City. Tuhan Gaje developed him to be one of his primary fighters and was part of a stick fighting Olympic exhibition team in the early 80’s. Eric was a founding member of the Dog Brothers stick fighting group in Southern California made famous by their “Real Contract” video series. There are Dog Brother chapters throughout the United States and Europe upholding the credo “Higher consciousness through harder contact”. He is one of the few people who can claim to have fought – full contact – most of the major martial arts weapons including the whip, tonfa, staff, Sai and nunchakus. Along with a no-nonsense approach to full contact stick fighting, Eric brings a wealth of experience in fighting strategies and training methods to bring the beginners or long-time practitioners to the next level. Eric lives in Houston Texas and travels nationally and internationally giving stick fighting seminars and work shops.
RON LEW
In the early 1960's, Ron Lew’s martial arts journey began with Kung fu with his cousin, Steven Lum, who was a student of T. Y. Wong in San Francisco. The renowned Jimmy Lee was one of the top students there. Ron Lew has been guided by several superb masters, including: Sifu Ngok Poy Ng, Shaolin Kung-Fu; Sifu Ted Sotelo, Fi Kuen; Professor Peng-si Yu and Min Ouyang, Qi Gong masters from Shanghai; Sifu Al Dacascos, WHKD; and SGM Cacoy Cañete of Cebu, Philippines, Doce Pares World Federation: Eskrima, Eskrido/Dumog and Pangamot.
MARK MIKITA
Mark Mikita opened his first martial arts school in 1978 and has been teaching full time ever since. Inspired by his father’s wartime experiences in the Philippines, witnessing first-hand the lethal effectiveness of Escrima-trained guerrillas fighting with bolos against Japanese katanas, Mark has been training for over 50 years and he is known for delving deeply into the core principles and often-missed details that bring the art to life in combat.
DUKE PAUL PORTER
Duke Paul of Bellatrix (Paul Porter) is a highly experienced martial artist in SCA armored combat and Judo. With over 50 years of practice, he has achieved 8 crown tourney victories and taught fighters across multiple states and countries. His expertise is unmatched, and he constantly refines and improves his fighting system. Paul's background in Judo and postural alignment therapy makes him an exceptional and safety-conscious instructor for SCA combat.
MAIJA SODERHOLM
Maija Soderholm is a lineage holder of the Visayan Style Corto Kadena of Maestro Sonny Umpad. She is also an authorized teacher under Luo DeXiu in the Yizong system of Internal Chinese Arts.
SCOTT MEREDITH
Scott Meredith has trained in a large variety of Asian and Western martial arts including Western boxing, Shaolin fighting systems, Russian Systema, Seven Star Praying Mantis, Yiquan, Taikiken, and Taijiquan for more than forty years. He speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese and Japanese. His passion is the cultivation of the internal energies of traditional 'soft' martial arts and yoga. He has trained in classical Ashtanga yoga for almost 20 years in India, the United States and Japan under some of the leading masters of that discipline. He has authored 15 books on martial arts and related subjects. He holds a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has worked for over 35 years as a researcher in artificial intelligence and natural language processing at leading high-tech companies including IBM, Apple Computer, Microsoft, Facebook/Meta, and a variety of startups.
RIICHI KITANO
Riichi Kitano hails from Japan and holds a Menkyo license as a teacher of Katori Shinto Ryu. He is also a Black Belt in Kyokushin Karate, Uyeshiba Aikido, and Kodokan Judo.
MAHIPAL LUNIA
Mahipal Lunia has studied and taught martial arts for more than 3 decades. He now serves as the CEO and Explorer-in-Residence at The Immersion Foundation.
DR. T.J. DESCH-OBI
Dr. T.J. Desch-Obi is the first outsider to attain mastery rank in the Afro-Colombian martial art of grima, holding an instructor level in five distinct styles and experience in another five. T.J. is an Associate Professor of African and African Diaspora History at the CUNY where he also teaches in the Black and Latino Studies, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and Religion departments. He is the author of Fighting for Honor: The History of African Martial Art Traditions in the Atlantic World. For this Immersion Labs Workshop T.J. will be teaching from both a style that was used against Spanish swordfighters and from a style that was purportedly directly influenced by European sword fighting
DEXTER MIKSCH
Beginning his martial arts journey at the age of 4, Dexter Miksch has traveled the world to study under masters of various systems. Being first and foremost a lifetime student of the martial arts, he has endeavored to find and apply the common principles of various martial arts with teachings from Eastern and Western physical culture. Dexter Miksch has studied under Master at Arms James A. Keating for 12 years, whose teachings and insights regarding the bowie knife and its influences have been a guiding light on his road to master applying fencing techniques to modern bladed combatives.
MIGUEL LOPEZ
Miguel Lopez was born and raised in San Francisco, CA. He grew up in the Western Addition district, an area when there were many illegal paths and dangers available to young people. Boxing gave him a way out. It kept him focused and out of trouble. He started his boxing training in 2000 at Harrison Street Boxing Gym with Sonny Marson as his coach. There he learned discipline, dedication, and determination that led him to win the San Francisco Golden Gloves in the same year. Boxing gave him the opportunity to train his body and mind on new levels. His professional boxing career started in 2009. As a personal trainer and boot camp instructor his goal is to push people to new levels and make them feel good about themselves. He says that the most fulfilling part of his job is to put a smile on people’s faces and help them get on the path to being healthy. He offers varied workouts that use your body to build strength fused with cardio and boxing techniques.
JERRY WALKER
Jerry Walker began training in Lua in 1974 with Charles Kenn and has continued learning Lua from a few others. He continues teaching and practicing Lua to this day.
CARLITO BONJOC
Guro Bonjoc, originally from the Philippines, moved to the United States at a young age and began his martial arts training. Under his father's guidance, he learned the Cadiz-Lapu Lapu Escrima, a combat-effective Filipino martial arts system based on double stick movements. His father encouraged him to explore other styles, leading him to study Talawan style of Largo Mano under Master Roy Onor and later, the Cabales Serrada system under Grandmaster Angel Cabales. Guro Bonjoc is now a highly respected instructor, sharing his knowledge of Filipino martial arts through videos, group instruction, seminars, and private lessons.
JAMES BISHOP
JAMES BISHOP, Ph.D. is the executive director of the non-profit Passionate Mind Institute. He is a licensed psychotherapist and educational psychologist whose research focuses on the study of people with exceptional talents. A leading authority on the philosophy and writings of Bruce Lee, Dr. Bishop is the recipient of the Bruce Lee Educational Foundation’s 2000 award for collegiate writing. He is the author of the books Remembering Bruce: The Enduring Legacy of the Martial Arts Superstar (1999), Bruce Lee: Dynamic Becoming (2004), and Who Wrote the Tao? The Literary Sourcebook for the Tao of Jeet Kune Do (2023). Dr. Bishop is also the producer and director of the 2020 documentary, Building the Bridge: The Bruce Lee Philosophy Lectures in Ireland. As a martial artist, Dr. Bishop studied Shotokan Karate under Sensei Boyd Thomas, Aikido under Sensei Tim Vought, Judo under Sensei Gerald Markee, and Jeet Kune Do under Sifu Willie Wilson and Sifu James Roberts. Dr. Bishop has written about martial arts for Black Belt, Martial Arts Illustrated, Inside Kung Fu, Bruce Lee, Original Jeet Kune Do Quarterly, Martial Arts Legends, and Bruce Lee Mania magazines.
STEAPHEN PICK
Steaphen Pick's fascination with medieval times led him to sword fighting in 1989 as part of a touring company in California, where he demonstrated armored knights' mobility and competed in full-contact tournaments. In 1999, he traveled to the UK to study under Maestro Paul MacDonald, becoming an authority on Joseph Swetnam's system. He opened the Davenriche European Martial Artes school in 2000 and retired from tournament fighting in 2013 to focus on teaching and consulting for theatrical combat and choreography. Steaphen continues to teach across the US and internationally and has been featured on TV shows like "Modern Marvels" and "Somebody's Gotta Do It." He has also choreographed fight scenes for television.
MICHAEL DONOHUE
Michael, originally from Southern California, had a successful 30-year career in video technology sales and marketing, working with major clients like NBC, Disney, and Sony Pictures. During a break in his career, he discovered Quix Stix, selling over 250,000 units after testing them in Fresno. Years later, he reintroduced Quix Stix, recognizing their value in enhancing hand-eye coordination and proprioception, especially for athletes and martial arts practitioners.
